April 11, 2009 - News from the Haiti trip

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere. It occupies the western portion of the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean Sea. Malnutrition affects about half the children under the age of five. Approximately one in ten children are able to attend public grade school. Private and mission schools when they are available and affordable are where most children attend.

Much of Haiti's problems stem from leaders who over many generations have cared little for their people. Children trained today with a practical, Christian education and given the resources for life will be the leaders of their communities and country tomorrow. By investing in her children, Haiti may be able to move beyond the need for our aid in the future.

Haiti Friendship Ministries endeavors to partner with Haitian pastors and missionaries to support their work among the children of Haiti and their families. Some of the ways this has been done include:
  • Sponsoring a Christian school. Funds help pay teacher salaries, lunch programs, and building maintenance and repairs. Suggested monthly sponsorship is $20, but any amount is welcome.
  • Helping with building projects. We are currently raising funds for a church building in Marchasse.
  • Mission trips. One week outreaches to visit projects and minister to children and their families.
Where our heart is recently:
  • MARCHASSE: This remote mountain community has no electricity, plumbing, internet or stores (like much of Haiti), yet it has lots of children and people, and tons of needs, both physical and spiritual. We have been helping with a primary school, but would like to also help them have: a high school, an adult literacy program, a church, etc.
  • LUNCH: With the sky-rocketing cost of food, this is harder than ever. But our desire is to see children in the schools eating a hot meal every day they are in school, and to discover an economical means to supplement the meals to add nutritional content
